Geplaatst: Vr 30 Jul, 2010 22:45 Onderwerp: smell / burned oil or gasoline emissions in the salon? |
 |
I have the second 405 in the last 7 years in Holland. I love them. The problem wit hthem both (first was 1993 1.6 automat and this 1992 1.4 injection automat) is that both of them smell of burned oil / gasoline outside and inside. OUtside people make comments "what are you driving on? stincks) inside: I myself cannot spend there more then a few minutes in still stand - without vent and wind inthe windows, get nausea. Forget about sleeping and stuff.
Is there some problem that need be fixed? I took the car to France to a good guarage of a friend, inspection returned 0 problems. It does make a big blue cloud of smoke out of exost everytime I start or idle - but they say something with the starter and just give a little extra gas - that works indeed... but still too much smoke like smell ... I really hope somebody could tell me how to fix this.
I thought maybe using mineral oil is the reason.. yep it does get worse with that, but using fully sysnthetic doesnot solve the problem either... and now it starts drinking oil like crazy: the previous one did it as well... why?

Sounds like there might be a problem with your car, going by the story you told.
There are several possible causes for the burned oil/fuel smell. If there's a catalytic converter, have it checked. The 4-gas measurement conducted as part of the yearly 'APK'/local MOT should provide some clue as to the operation of the converter and the general operation of the engine. I would also advice to check for any oil or exhaust system leaks, paying particularly attention to the exhaust manifold (may be difficult to inspect as it sits behind the engine), the head and rocker cover gaskets and the exhaust (down) pipe.
Another possible source of strange and nauseating smells is the heater matrix. This tends to rapture, especially if there has been any abnormal pressure buildup in the coolant circuit. Note however that coolant smells sort of sweet, and not particularly like petrol or burned materials.
The oil plume after starting could be caused by faulty/dried out valve rod seals. Is there any oil smoke when you rev the engine after running it idle for a while? In older engines like yours the seals have in many cases dried out by now and could be replaced, usually by removing and overhauling the cylinder head. Note that oil plumes may also have other causes, such as oil finding its way into the cylinders through e.g. a leaking cylinder head gasket.
So do some checks, see if all the fluids are sufficiently present and clear, and check for any loss of compression (have nearly any local car workshop give you a hand, or pay Edgar/EH Autoservice a visit) or signs of pressure buildup in the coolant circuits. How much oil do your cars use? I assume you check and top off regularly.
Let me know if this helps any, and post back some observations to allow us to see where this is going.

Don't know if you can use it for all models, I just know, I used Motor-up fluid for my car to reduce oil use. It wasn't much what he used, but just thought, give it a try and it worked excellent on my diesel.
I just think, this stuff ain't good for an injection engine, be be carefull with that.
If you don't have that kind of engine, give it a try, easy solution without becoming technical.
Make sure the enigine is warm en shut down. Pour it in the same place as your oil and take the car for at least a 20 mile drive right after you put it in.

Done Slick50 ones, works fine until you need to repair shafts and so on.
Oil leaks will not close, motor turn some better.
So this kind of flueds will not help in anyway to stop oil leaks

Slick 50 worked well with some oil sill in my previous 405 1900 with carberateur engine? You need to use it well.
Poor it in on a hot engine, after that, take a 10 mile drive right away but be careful.
I know somebody who completely messed up his engine with it. Make sure it's the right stuff for YOUR car.
I was very satisfied with it. Oil leaks was gone, oil use was less and the car performed much better.

Teflon will not stick to metal.
Teflon needs over 240 deg.C for melting.
Read some stuff on the net about it.
Yes it can be for realy old cars.
Oil made in 2000 is far more better then the engines when they made slick50.
Done use it

Sorry k=pax I just found the detailed answer from you now. I will try to check. the collant not a problem - that problem I had in the previous Peugeot. This here something to do with oil, as the use of oil increasing progressively. Now I have to use about 2 - 3 litre per month, or even more when higher milage than average. Smoke plum : sometimes there sometimes not. Revving from idle does not do that.

Ok, so you obviously have an oil leak, I think probably in the cilinder head. Kinda weird that there's no plume when revving after idling some time. I recommend driving the car to EH Autoservice (Edgar) in Zierikzee for some more diagnosis.

I guess for the price of a used 405 you could easily put in
